Becoming a mystery shopper does not require a high level of skill or education. In fact, anybody can be a secret shopper as long as they have the right attitude and the ability to produce comprehensive reports for the hiring company. Qualifications aren’t strict for most mystery shopping companies, which makes it a great part-time job option for students, work-at-home parents, or people who have a full-time job, but would like to earn additional income.
Even though it is fairly easy to enter the field, keep in mind that, in order to be successful at mystery shopping, you must have the right approach. Attitude and interest play a large role in your ability to fulfill assignments and produce high-quality reports in an efficient manner.
To be a qualified mystery shopper, you must exhibit these traits:
- Love to Shop – If you love to shop, then you are qualified to become a mystery shopper. Basically, what you do is visit an establishment, spend time shopping in the store to obtain the information you need, and produce a report. So, if you love to shop, your task will be a breeze.
- Discreet – A secret shopper is like an undercover agent. You need to make sure that your identity is not revealed because it will spoil your assignment (and your hiring company’s investment). Employees will be more cautious and act indifferently than normal if they sense they are being observed on the job.
- Observant – You must be able to keenly observe the things around you, particularly those areas that pertain to your task. Your observations provide the information you need to include in your report to the hiring company, so this is one of the most important requirements.
- Objective – Keep in mind that the company that hires you does not need your thoughts or opinions about their store or their products. All they want is straight-to-the-point observations on what is actually going on in their store. It is best not to report any emotional encounters with a salesperson or how you feel about their product unless they ask for that information. Stick to what is needed.
- Detailed Reporting – When it comes to creating a good report, make sure you have gathered enough information to provide all of the details the hiring company has requested. Do not simply give yes or no answers to their question. Go into as much relevant detail as possible.
- Accurate – In addition to detailed reporting, you must also be accurate with your details. Make sure that what you provide to them is up-to-date information and what is really currently happening in their store.
