Millennials – the generation born between 1982 and 2000 – are growing within our workforce. This is the generation that grew up with technology. They are educated, self-confident and have an inordinate ability to multi-task.

A flatter management structure is the preference of the millennial workforce. Millennials take a team approach to solving a problem. Without the distraction of middle management.

The average age of a CEO in the US is 55. The last of the baby boomers are counting on the millennials to run their organizations. Some cross-generational learning must be had to help organizations understand how to keep the new generation of workers engaged and motivated.

- Your company must have a compelling vision. For millennials, it must go beyond making corporate profits. What does your company contribute to the greater good?
- Engage in conversation. This generation of workers wants to hear from their manager regularly. They want to know the good, bad and the ugly daily. No waiting around to know how they are doing.
- Embrace technology and use it in your business. These employees only know a wireless, digital world. Using all sources of on line communication is just their way of life. And it needs to be part of their work space.
- Allow employees to be innovative. Inspired by young entrepreneurs and CEO’s like Marc Zuckerberg, this generation is willing to take risks. They enjoy the spirit of entrepreneurship.
