Thanks so much for tuning in to the Unstoppable Success Podcast series Episode number 15 – Overcoming Fear.
I love podcasts because they allow us to explore and learn about topics that we might not feel really comfortable talking about in group settings like at networking events or even in mastermind coaching sessions. So in today’s Unstoppable Success podcast session, we’re going to be talking about your fears and why they are most certainly holding you back from achieving the success you want for yourself in this life and the success you want in your career.
On a personal level fears can take many forms. As a matter of fact, there are probably as many fears out there as there are people who subscribe to this podcast. But there are some fears that are more popular than others. The fears of spiders and snakes, death, falling, heights, claustrophobia-which is the fear of small spaces, agoraphobia-which is the fear of wide open spaces are some common fears to mention. But there are those who fear commitment, death, losing their minds or health, drowning, or the dark.
On a business level, no matter if you are a small business owner, entrepreneur, solopreneur, mid-level or upper level manager at a corporation, you have fears too. For the small business owner, these could take the form of losing your business and with it all of your money and possessions. We also call this fear the fear of failure. Your fear may also be of public speaking, one of the most common fears for all human beings and you may also fear economic recession, losing your job, getting a new boss, or being promoted if you get too good at your job, finding yourself in a situation where you have to learn new skills.
And believe it or not, some career professionals and people in general fear success. They fear that their success will somehow make them different from those they love and hang out with and as a result, they will be separated from their group, or worse yet, they won’t be loved anymore.
So how do we overcome these fears that limit us and hold us back from the unstoppable success we were born to have?
The first tip is to become aware of your fears and where they come from. Take that person who is on the perpetual diet. She starts eating healthier and exercising more often and when she is almost at her goal, something happens and she gains all the weight back that she lost and then some. Being aware means that this person doesn’t fear being thin or healthy. What she fears is that the weight loss will make her different and her friends and family might not love her anymore.
The second tip I have for you about overcoming fear is to re-frame it. Let’s say that you were recently promoted and your job now requires you to frequently speak in front of crowds. Rather than focusing on the negative thoughts of what could go wrong to make you look foolish, concentrate on the positive. Think of all the people you will be helping with your message and all the lives you may be changing because of something you said.
Finally, don’t let fear hold you back. Get a coach. Find a support system in the form of someone who will be in your corner to encourage you to move forward with the activities, goals and decisions that are going to be good for you as you grow.
Whether it’s a coach to help you be more committed in your personal relationships or work experiences, a coach to help you with your weight loss, family dynamics, a job search, a new business venture, time and goal management, or public speaking – there is a coach out there for you to help you move well beyond any fear that may be holding you back.
So don’t be afraid to think about your fears and how they are limiting you in this fabulous life. Confronting your fears is the sign of a courageous person and it’s the sign of someone who wants to live life to its fullest. So get out there, look your fears in the face, then go be unstoppable. You deserve it.
