In today’s episode of the Unstoppable Success Coaching podcast, I’ll share some thoughts around the theory of work-life balance.
I’ve been doing a lot of research these last few months on Work/Life Balance and its impact on the level of customer service in our organizations. Some people say that Work/Life Balance is a myth, but I believe we can strike harmony between these two environments if we put our minds to it.
As managers, supervisors, and business owners, we spend time observing our employees and contractors to be sure they aren’t getting burned out due to work/life imbalances.
But what about us? Who is taking care of us as business leaders?
As human beings in general, we usually do a fairly poor job of self-monitoring our levels of fatigue, burnout, overwhelm, and exhaustion. It’s one of the reasons we get sick with colds and flu viruses. Our immune systems get depleted. Worse yet, some people come down with illnesses that need to be managed with medication like high blood pressure. In our positions of leadership, most of us can not afford time off from work due to illness. So, what can we do?
Think about these ideas:
- Schedule a break from the workplace once a quarter. Now this time away can be work related. A well placed conference here and there is always a great idea. The change in scenery will do wonders to charge your battery.
- Begin your day with some quiet time. Some people meditate- others read- some leaders I know sit with their day planners in the early morning hours to get clear on what will be expected of them during the day.
- Know your body clock. If you are more productive in the morning, set that alarm to get some work that requires creativity and focus done on your PC even before you get into your office.
- Be sure to work in activities that nourish your spirit de-stress you. Massages, facials, yoga, tai chi, an art class…whatever makes your heart sing….just find time to do a little something nice for yourself as often as your budget will allow. And in an effort to keep your home life in harmony- find things that maybe your whole family will enjoy so you don’t have to take time away from those you love and want to spend time with! After all, our family and friends are the reason we are all working so hard!
