As a manager, supervisor, and coach in your organization, it is your responsibility to train your staff when it comes to product knowledge. Be it a new type of checking account or a new formulation of house paint, your staff deserves to look and sound knowledgeable in front of your customers.
Some of your employees may resist product knowledge training at first, especially those who may be supporting your operations on a part time basis. But when you approach them with the sincere desire to want them to look their best when answering customer questions, they will gradually begin to enjoy the challenge of learning about your product and service offerings and they may even stop hiding in the back room when there are customers to help on the sales floor!
Some of the tools available to you as you coach your staff are everyday learning aids like product marketing brochures. A wealth of information can be found in documents of this nature.
Another way to amp up your product knowledge training is to invite sales reps from these companies to come in and talk to the staff about how their products can be used and the benefits the customer will experience as a result.
Hop on social media to see what actual consumers are saying about products and services in the way of testimonials and critiques.
And finally, in your sales meetings, talk about practical ways that the product or service can be used and share stories that come from your customers regarding their creative use of the products you sell.
So the next time you are struggling to find topics to discuss at your next team meeting, think about putting some product knowledge training on the agenda. You will instill more confidence, enthusiasm, and trust in your team and your customers.
