Many people get involved with mystery shopping because it sounds like FUN! Get paid to shop. But excellent mystery shoppers understand that the responsibilities of mystery shopping are a bit more involved.
Excellent mystery shoppers need to have good writing skills and good observations skills. To make significant money as a mystery shopper, you need to be an exceptional manager of time and schedules.
But there is one very simple way to make yourself stand out from the so-so mystery shoppers. A way to rise to the top of any scheduler’s go-to list.
Read the Instructions!
It sounds simple, but it is amazing how many people overlook the important details of what must be done for a shop.
By carefully reading the assignment sent to you, you can avoid time consuming follow-up calls and emails from your scheduler.
Below are some important points to look out for:
- Due date – Clients need reports for meetings, reviews, etc. Your information is important to someone; having it there on time is vital. Mark your calendar when your assignment comes in, and be sure you can meet this deadline. If not, let us know ASAP.
- Primary purpose of the shop – If the primary purpose is to evaluate customer service (as most are), be sure the focus of your observation is on the customer service. Do not discuss the condition of the carpet when the form asks about how you were greeted. Be tuned in to what the client is looking for.
- Contact person – If you are to evaluate a specific person, be sure you do whatever it takes to get that person. Again, there is a reason that person’s name is on your assignment letter.
- Specific questions to be asked – Many assignments will give a specific scenario or question to be asked of the sales or customer service representative. Reports returned without that information most likely would not be accepted. Check your notes prior to walking into an establishment to be sure that you know what you need to ask.
Taking a few extra minutes to read the instructions for assignments will pay off in your conducting the shop as our client requires. And more mystery shopping work for you in the future!
